For the past three years, the Piedmont Flyers’ Bicycle Club, a local bike club which promotes cycling in the area, has partnered with local bike shops and WXII to provide needy children in Forsyth and Yadkin counties with new bicycles at Christmas. Specifically, the Flyers have raised money to purchase bikes at cost and have then donated them to the WXII Christmas Toy Program. Over the past three years, over 150 new bikes have been given to needy children in the surrounding communities at Christmas. The Piedmont Flyers are now partnering with CycleSafe.org to expand this program by sponsoring a summer bicycle give-away program for needy children. CycleSafe is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing a community’s active lifestyle through bicycle safety and education. To help meet their missions, CycleSafe and the Piedmont Flyers will be soliciting donations of used children’s bike. Because CycleSafe.org is a non-profit organization, individuals can donate used children’s bikes to CycleSafe and receive a tax deduction as the law permits for their donation. These bikes can be dropped off at the Hanes Park Classic bike race on August 3, 2008. |
